Morelia, Michoacán.- The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is investigating the former governor of Michoacán, Silvano Aureoles Conejo, for alleged links to organized crime and drug trafficking.

According to the investigation folder that the DEA has and that was published on the website www.dea.gov, the alleged links of Aureoles Conejo with Nicolás Sierra Santana, alias El Gordo, leader of the Los Viagras Cartel, who in 2018 accused the former governor of having payed him 10 million pesos to guarantee peace for the entity, as well as another million pesos for the purchase of votes during the electoral process that year.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of the investigation led by the DEA, due to the DEA is investigating the role played by Silvano Aureoles Conejo along with the former commissioner for security in Michoacán, Alfredo Castillo, for the creation of new drug cartels in Michoacán.

It should be noted that in 2014, the government of Enrique Peña Nieto created the Commission for Security and Integral Development in the State of Michoacán, a government body that armed the self-defense groups to combat the Templar Knights, however, the weapons delivered to self-defense groups ended up arming four criminal groups that grew during the same period of time: The Valencia Cartel, Templar Knights, Los Viagras and Guerreros Unidos.

The DEA investigation also contemplates the relationship that Alfredo Castillo played in the creation of these four drug trafficking groups, possible actions by Aureoles Conejo to defend the drug cartels, as well as an alleged negotiation between Alfredo Castillo, organized crime and Silvano Aureoles to win the election.
