Actions of gangs in Ecuador reflects Mexican drug strategy: experts

México City.- The attacks carried out by criminal gangs in Ecuador on Tuesday reflect the shock strategy employed by Mexican drug trafficking organizations in the past to avoid the capture of kingpins, according to experts.

The incidents followed the escape of José Adolfo Macías, alias ‘Fito,’ leader of ‘los Choneros,’ one of the country’s most dangerous criminal gangs with alleged connections to Mexican cartels.

Experts note similarities to the strategy used by the Sinaloa Cartel when authorities detained Ovidio Guzmán, ‘El Chapo’s’ son, in 2019, although they don’t directly link Mexican drug trafficking to the recent violence in Ecuador.
