Migrants leave Tapachula and advance in caravan towards the United States.

TAPACHULA, Chis., March 25, 2024 – Over 1,500 undocumented individuals left this locality in a caravan named “Migrant Viacrucis” after the Mexican government denied them documents to transit through Mexican territory.

Carrying wooden crosses and a banner reading “killer of poor migrants,” the undocumented individuals carry their children, parents, siblings, and friends in their arms, strollers, and tricycles.

In this quest for the “American dream,” a small dog named “Princess” also travels along. The contingent, composed of men, women, and children, is led by Catholic priest Heyman Vázquez Medina, founder of the Hogar de la Misericordia shelter in the municipality of Arriaga, who has dedicated himself to defending the human rights of foreigners. Migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Africa began their journey with the first rays of sunlight after spending the night at the Bicentennial Park in this locality. The objective is to walk 19 kilometers until reaching the town of Álvaro Obregón, where they will rest and continue tomorrow towards the city of Huixtla.
